  • Upward Bound/Upward Bound Math & Science are college preparatory programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education under the federal TRIO umbrella. The TRIO Programs (Talent Search, Student Support Services, Upward Bound, Educational Opportunity Centers, and Ronald E. McNair), were created by the US Congress to encourage qualified students to complete high school and pursue higher education.

    The Middlesex Community College TRIO-Upward Bound/Upward Bound Math & Science are located at Lowell High School and provide students with the skills to succeed academically. Through a semester-based sequence of credited academic courses, this program will meet the specialized needs of students in grades 9-12.

    Participants:
    The TRIO-Upward Bound program is funded to assist 55 students while the Upward Bound Math & Science program is funded to assist 60 students enrolled at Lowell High School who meet the following criteria:

    • Low-income and first-generation students
    • Enrolled in college preparatory courses
    • Meet program academic need guidelines

    Services:
    The program is a carefully planned intensive college preparatory program that consists of:

    • 2.5 credits per semester college preparatory class, graded on a pass/fail basis.
    • 6-week intensive summer academic/experiential component
    • academic, career, and personal advising
    • motivational group activities
    • cultural enrichment activities
    • college campus tours
    • assistance with the college admission process
    • academic support resources

    Application Process:
    To be considered, students need to complete and submit the following forms:

    • Upward Bound Application
    • Teacher's Recommendation
    • Guidance Counselor Recommendation
    • Signed Parent/legal guardian and Participant Agreement form
    • Social Security Number must be provided upon acceptance into the program.

    In addition, students need to:

    • Interview with an Upward Bound Staff Member
    • Commit to attend a 6-week Summer Enrichment Program

    • Upward Bound is a federally funded program that requires that participants meet certain guidelines to participate. The information provided on this form will be used to determine if the student is eligible to apply. It does not imply any automatic acceptance into the program.

    • Student will be required to:

      • Abide by the Lowell High School's rules of conduct as outlined in the Student Handbook.
      • Attend Upward Bound Math & Science course and classroom activities.
      • Attend and participate in a 6-week intensive academic/experiential summer component at Middlesex Community College
      • Utilize the academic, career, and personal counseling services and resources.
      • Attend and participate in all cultural enrichment field trips and college campus tours.
      • Share with parents/guardians their Upward Bound college plans, including college applications, financial aid and test registration and deadlines, etc.

      I _____ (parent/guardian) understand the goals, objectives, and requirements of the TRiO Upward Bound Program, and agree to support my son/daughter, _____ (student's name), in fulfilling them. I understand that if my child does not meet the required goals and objectives, he/she will be dismissed from the program. I also give permission to the MCC-TRIO Upward Bound Program to publish any photographs taken of my son/daughter, whose name appears above, for promotional purposes.

      By signing this form I commit to follow all of the Upward Bound program requirements and guidelines, if accepted into the program.
