  • TRIO STEM SCHOLARS Application


    The TRIO STEM Scholars Program is funded by a TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This program serves the academic needs of first-generation, low-income, and disabled students at Los Angeles Southwest College.

    TRIO STEM Scholars is not a financial aid or scholarship program. It is a support program designed to increase the retention, graduation and transfer success for students who are low-income, first generation or have a verified disability. This program works primarily with students interested in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) and affiliated majors. The STEM Scholars program provides information to learn about careers and educational opportunities beyond Los Angeles Southwest College.

    Benefits of TRIO STEM

    TUTORING

    TRIO STEM Scholars offers one-on-one and group tutorial sessions for most math and science courses.

    SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION (SI)

    Supplemental instruction (SI) is an academic assistance program for selected courses that utilizes peer-assisted, collaborative learning “workshops” called SI sessions. Sessions are regularly scheduled, informal review sessions in which students compare notes, discuss readings, develop organizational skills, and take mock exams.

    WORKSHOPS

    Academic success workshops will be offered to help TRIO STEM Scholars improve their financial literacy, set and reach personal and academic goals, prepare for transfer and identify appropriate majors. Additional topics will be offered.

    FIELD TRIPS

    The TRIO Programs schedule field trips every semester to visit local California State University, University of California campuses along with Private Universities. Check with the TRIO office for scheduled campus tours and dates.

    STUDY MATERIALS

    Math and science reference textbooks are available for TRIO STEM Scholars upon request (located in SSB 229). The text books can only be used in the study area and cannot be taken home.

    To be considered for STEM Scholars, please complete the attached application and submit the required documentation. Please make sure the following is complete before submitting your application:

    • You must be enrolled in 9 or more units at Los Angeles Southwest College with an educational goal to graduate with an Associate’s degree, a Certificate and/or transfer to a four-year institution.
    • Answer ALL questions on the application.
    • If available, please attach a copy of your financial aid award letter.
    • Sign the application certifying that the information you have provided is correct.
    • Finally: meet with the TRIO STEM Scholars Program Director to submit the application and design a comprehensive educational plan
