      Thank you for your interest in the Northwest-Shoals Community College UPWARD BOUND Program! 

      Upward Bound is one of the federal TRiO Programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The program is an additional support system to assist high school students who demonstrate the ability, motivation, and discipline to attend college after graduating from high school.  It is a year round program that helps to prepare students for college through tutoring, academic classes, cultural activities, college awareness, career exploration, and academic/personal advising. 

      • All parts of the application must be completed to be considered. If you are unsure of any part, please call for assistance. 256-331-8128, 256-331-8127, or 256-331-8129.
      • Completed applications will be reviewed and those qualified will be selected for an in-person interview. If you are invited to interview, you will be given notice and the interview will occur on your high school campus during school hours. 
      • Applicants will be notified by letter and phone call if they are accepted into the program. 

      If you are accepted as a participant in the Upward Bound Program, there are several activities in which you will be involved. 

      • During the Academic Component (September-May)
        • Weekly tutoring and counseling sessions at your high school
        • Maintain a “B” or higher in all classes (submit all progress reports and report cards to UB staff)
        • Monthly Saturday workshops or cultural trips. 
          • Workshops will occur on Northwest-Shoals Community College- Phil Campbell campus. Topics will cover ACT prep, college applications, FAFSA applications, scholarship applications, mental and social health, STEM, and many more. Transportation will be provided from your hometown to and from the campus. Breakfast and lunch will be served. (8am-12pm)
          • Cultural Trips will vary and have only 2 pick up locations: PC campus and Shoals campus. Students will need transportation to pick up and transportation home after. 
      • Summer Component at Northwest-Shoals Community College- Phil Campbell (May-July)
        • 4-weeks of some college classes (with daily tutoring), enrichment classes, workshops, guest speakers, social activities, field trips, etc. Breakfast, snacks and lunch will be provided daily. Transportation from a pick-up location in your hometown will be provided daily.
          • Classes start at the end of May and all of June, 8am-3pm  Mon-Thur. 
          • Friday Field Trips/ Field Days (varying times and optional, with all expenses covered & only be 2 pick-up locations; PC campus and Shoals campus)
        • End-of-Year Banquet for you and your family to celebrate
        • End-of-Year Trips: 2-day college visits for the juniors and a 3-day trip for the seniors in July. 
      • Quarterly Stipend Checks
        • As an additional incentive, students will receive stipends for the weeks they attend tutoring sessions (after probationary period) and summer classes. This is currently $10 for each week of attendance and paid quarterly by check. 

      Upward Bound is FREE to its participants. Most transportation costs to Upward Bound activities, admissions, fees, and meals are paid by the program. Always reach out if there is any concern.

      The information is protected by the Privacy Act and no one may see it except those who work with or for the Upward Bound Program or are specifically authorized by the Program Manager of Upward Bound.

    • Upward Bound is an on-going program. If you accept an invitation to participate in the program, you are expected to continue throughout the school year and during the summer component.

      *We give our permission to Upward Bound to obtain any and all of the applicant’s academic records including, but not limited to: transcripts, test scores, grade reports, attendance records, agency records, and other relevant documents.  This permission granted is effective throughout high school, college career, and includes final transcripts upon graduation from secondary school and college.

      *If the applicant is selected for Upward Bound, he/she has my permission to participate in all Upward Bound activities, make all scheduled trips, and to attend the six-week summer program (if applicable). 

      *We also give our permission for the participant’s name and photo to be used in any media presentation concerning the Upward Bound Program. 

      *If asked by an authorized person, we agree to give proof of the information stated on the above application.
