About Upward Bound
Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves: high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.
Academic Program Goals
During the school year, Upward Bound students will enroll in college preparatory classes and will be supported by an advisor to prepare them for academic success. Students will attend academic advising sessions and participate in academic support services. We will offer tutoring for mathematics, laboratory science, foreign language, composition and literature, as well as study skills. Students will also attend seminars regarding post-secondary educational opportunities. By the time the student reaches 11th grade, they will participate in a dual enrollment program that will allow them to accumulate college credits while in high school, free of cost.
Summer Program
Upward Bound’s summer component is an introduction to the college experience. Students will take a series of courses during a six-week period at the Oxnard College campus. It is designed to assist students with the challenges of completing college preparatory courses at their high school. There will be weekly field trips that aim to broaden the student’s understanding of cultural development, career opportunities and appreciation of the arts.
Year–round Academy
Students will meet monthly to reinforce their academic skills while engaging in academic advisement, academic progress, interact with guest speakers, career exploration, scholarship information, cultural field trips and tours of colleges and universities. Students will also receive individualized assistance with college applications, assistance with financial aid information and registration of college courses and entrance exams (ACT and SAT).
