    • About Upward Bound
    • About Upward Bound
Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves: high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

      Academic Program Goals
During the school year, Upward Bound students will enroll in college preparatory classes and will be supported by an advisor to prepare them for academic success. Students will attend academic advising sessions and participate in academic support services. We will offer tutoring for mathematics, laboratory science, foreign language, composition and literature, as well as study skills. Students will also attend seminars regarding post-secondary educational opportunities. By the time the student reaches 11th grade, they will participate in a dual enrollment program that will allow them to accumulate college credits while in high school, free of cost.

      Summer Program
Upward Bound’s summer component is an introduction to the college experience. Students will take a series of courses during a six-week period at the Oxnard College campus. It is designed to assist students with the challenges of completing college preparatory courses at their high school. There will be weekly field trips that aim to broaden the student’s understanding of cultural development, career opportunities and appreciation of the arts.

      Year–round Academy
Students will meet monthly to reinforce their academic skills while engaging in academic advisement, academic progress, interact with guest speakers, career exploration, scholarship information, cultural field trips and tours of colleges and universities. Students will also receive individualized assistance with college applications, assistance with financial aid information and registration of college courses and entrance exams (ACT and SAT).

    • Expectations & Commitments
    • This is a program specifically designed for students who have the desire to graduate from high school and attend a college (community college or a 4-year university) and pursue a college degree.

As a result, should you decide to apply for our program, you are indicating to our program staff that you are serious about your education and committed to the requirements we expect of you. Expectations are listed below.

      • Commitment: once admitted to our program, the expectation is that you will fully participate until you graduate from high school with your diploma and have plans that same fall to attend a community college or 4-year university.
      • Meet & Communicate with TRIO Upward Bound staff regularly: we expect you to check in with your Upward Bound mentor weekly and counselor at least twice a month. This does not always have to be a meeting to discuss your classes but can also be a general check-in to see how you are doing. If anything comes up, please let us know a day or two in advance, not the day of an event.
      • Maintain (or improve) academic standing: we design our program around providing you with the support you need to succeed, tutoring included. As a result, we expect you to hold your end of the bargain and work hard to have a GPA of 2.5 or above.
      • Attend workshops: the Upward Bound team will offer various workshops throughout the year (example: financial aid, college application, career exploration, organizational, advocacy, etc.). It is expected that you will attend all of our workshops throughout the academic year. Attending workshops consistently will also give you priority to our fun field trips.
      • Attend TRIO Upward Bound Summer Programming: a part of our program involves a 6-week academic summer component. As an Upward Bound student you are expected and required to attend this at Oxnard College, starting the Monday after your last day of school. We have classes that will get you ahead of the next academic year, explore careers, answer college questions, etc. Every Friday is a fun field trip, and the final week will have you living at a university dorm, experiencing what is like to live on-campus as a university student.
      • HAVE FUN & MAKE LIFELONG FRIENDS: as we mentioned earlier, TRIO is family. You will see for yourself, if admitted, the bond you will form with your peers who have the same mentality of pursuing a college degree. We understand the importance of taking your education seriously, but we also value having fun and making friends!
