    TRIO Talent Search Application

    The TRIO Talent Search grant is a FREE program through the U.S. Department of Education for eligible middle and high school students in Broward County School District. Our goal is to assist low-income; first generation students attain their goal of post-secondary education.

    The Talent Search Program is committed to guiding and preparing students for post-secondary success through career exploration, college planning, financial literacy, FAFSA and Scholarship workshops.

    Eligibility is based on federally defined criteria where at least one of the following must be met:

    • Be a first-generation college student (neither parent has a Bachelor’s degree)
      Limited income (verified by a Talent Search member)
    • An eligible student must be currently enrolled in one of the target schools and be either a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who has not yet earned a high school degree but is committing to using Talent Search resources.

    WHEN SHOULD I APPLY?

    Immediately! Applications are accepted throughout the year, but the program size is limited. Please answer all the questions on the application, print clearly in ink. Your responses are necessary to determine program eligibility and will be kept confidential.

    • CONSENT FOR SERVICES:

      I understand pre-college and educational outreach services including but not limited to college and career advising, financial literacy/FAFSA information, scholarship information will be provided as needed. Services are provided by Talent Search (TS) staff (Director, Student Support Specialist, Teachers, Mentors, Volunteers) and are designed to help student’s achieve post secondary success. These services are provided free of charge and at the student’s will.

      ALL INFORMATION RECEIVED WILL BE KEPT CONFIDENTIAL IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT.

      RELEASE OF INFORMATION:

      I authorize Talent Search to access academic and personal information in the legitimate educational interest of my student including but not limited to: public assistance, free & reduced lunch documentation; standardized test scores (State testing scores, SAT, ACT, GED); report cards; unofficial transcripts; official transcripts; attendance records; information about the status of post-secondary education admission/enrollment; financial aid documentation including FAFSA pin code, SAR, and award letters in accordance with The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99).

      I understand this information is essential in assisting me/my child in preparation for post-secondary education. I further understand all information received is for TS use only and is held strictly confidential.

      I understand that I am giving Broward College Talent Search Project Director and Student Support Specialist permission to access my student’s grade and attendance information directly from appropriate school personnel and to request the other academic and behavior information directly from school staff. I intend to give permission for Talent Search to access and collect this information for the duration of my student’s participation in the program and throughout his or her middle or high school and college career, however, if I choose to withdraw this permission, I can call the Talent Search Project Director at Broward College (954-201-4420) at the Talent Search Director at my child’s school.

      • Attend school regularly and earn my best grades                     .
      • Contact my Talent Search advisor if there is a change in my class schedule, home address or phone number, and/or if my family plans to move.
      • Attend and participate in Talent Search program activities and programs such as college visits, financial aid workshops, and more.
      • Successfully be promoted to the next grade each year in the program.
      • Seek help from teachers/school staff and/or my Talent Search advisor when needed.
      • Apply for financial aid during my senior year.
      • Graduate from high school and enroll in postsecondary education institution after graduation.
