Utah Valley University TRIO Student Support Services Tutoring Policy and Contract
Tutoring is not a replacement for attending classes or intended to be instructional. The TRIO program is used to assist students in clarification of information and to foster a deeper understanding of the subject while simultaneously promoting independent learning skills. Again, you are not able to use the program to
replace class attendance, homework completion, or rely on the tutor as an instructor.
Policies and Procedures
As a student who is being offered personal tutoring through the TRIO Student Support Services program, I agree to the following:
- After I submit a Tutor Request Form, a tutor will be assigned to me within 3 - 5 working days.
- The assigned tutor will then contact me for the initial tutoring appointment via Outlook Email or Microsoft Teams.
- The tutor and I will agree on a time and a date for the tutoring appointment.
- All tutoring will be done in the TRIO Student Support Services office located in Liberal Arts 114
- I understand I am responsible to be on time and prepared for all tutoring appointments.
- Being prepared for a tutorial experience means:
- I will have homework completed to the best of my ability
- I will read over homework assignments prior to my tutorial session
- I will do my best to have questions prepared for my tutor from the
homework or reading assignments.
- I understand it is my responsibility to maintain focus on the material being taught during a tutorial session.
- I understand I am responsible to contact the tutor as soon as I become aware of the need to cancel a scheduled appointment.
- I acknowledge that if I am feeling ill, I will notify my tutor in a timely manner and cancel, reschedule, or change the appointment to an online Teams Meeting if necessary.
- I understand the tutors and administrative staff reserve the right to refuse service to me if they consider there to be a potential health threat.
- I understand I may lose my tutoring privileges with more than 4 consecutive canceled or rescheduled appointments and may be required to schedule an appointment with the Tutoring Coordinator in order to consider getting my tutoring appointments reinstated.
- I understand I will lose my tutoring privilege during the semester with two No Shows
- A No Show is defined as no prior notification of canceling a scheduled appointment.
- To cancel or reschedule an appointment, I can either contact the tutor, tutor coordinator, or TRIO Desk at least one hour prior to the scheduled appointment by calling 801-863-8541.
- I understand I am pre-approved for two, 50-minute appointments a week of tutoring per subject for a maximum of two subjects. However, if I feel I need more tutoring, I can contact the Tutor Coordinator to discuss exceptions to this policy.
- I understand each 50-minute tutoring session is most effective for my retention and mastery of the subject matter. I have the right to contact the tutor coordinator to discuss exceptions to this policy.
- I understand that all communications from TRIO Staff will be limited to my Microsoft Teams or Outlook Student ID email
- I acknowledge that if I give my personal cell phone number to TRIO, that they may (but are not required to) use that as my primary form of contact and this is determined at TRIO's Discretion.
