Dear Parent/Guardian:

Thank you for your interest in the LNESC Upward Bound program. Upward Bound (UB) is a FREE college preparatory program for high school students who want to attend college. UB is specifically designed to strengthen the academic skills of eligible high school students to excel academically and ultimately pursue a postsecondary degree after high school graduation.

To comply with federal regulations, we collect income, citizenship, and other qualifying information. All information provided is protected under the Privacy Act and is accessible only to LNESC Upward Bound staff.
All UB participants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Have an interest in attending college
- Demonstrate academic need
- Qualify as low-income and/or have neither parent who has earned a bachelor’s degree
- Commit to remain actively involved in UB until graduating from high school.
Services provided by UB include:

Tutoring: Afterschool tutoring is offered Monday-Thursday and is designed to assist students in all areas of academic skill development.

Saturday Academies: Monthly Saturday Academies provide additional academic support, improve test preparation skills, and provide students with opportunities to explore topics outside the classroom.

Academic Advising: We provide individual assistance with course selection, college admissions and financial aid application process.

Summer Institute and Excursion: During the summer, students participate in a six-week program focused on enhancing their skills through academic enrichment and providing a simulated college experience. Students who perform well during the Summer Institute may be selected to participate in a FREE, week-long, out-of-state trip, offering them the chance to tour different college campuses and participate in unique experiential learning activities beyond their usual experiences.

Before submitting your application, ensure all required documents are filled out and included. Use the checklist below to verify everything is complete.

All completed applications will be reviewed and eligible applicants contacted within 14 days for a Student & Parent Interview. If your child is selected to participate in Upward Bound, we highly encourage parents to attend ALL Parent/Teacher Conferences. Thank you for your interest in the Upward Bound Project. Student Essay
The personal essay is an important part of the selection process and must be completed by student. Your final essay will be evaluated for thoughtfulness of content. Discuss the following topics. Please attach additional pages if necessary.
Essay Writing Tips:
- Be specific: Use concrete examples and personal stories to make your points clear and engaging.
- Be sincere: Write honestly and let your personality and unique experiences shine through.
- Be clear and concise: Organize your thoughts in a logical way and use language that is easy to follow.
- Proofread carefully: Check for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors.
- Do your research: Learn about Upward Bound and show your understanding of its mission and goals in your essay.
- Essays less than 250 words will NOT be accepted!

Parent Release
The information requested authorizes media release, school records release, and internet use release. The form also requests medical information and authorizes medical treatment in case of emergency. LNESC is able to provide these free services through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education under TRIO’s Upward Bound Program. The Federal Privacy Act and Family Rights and Privacy Act protect the personal information you give on this application. This application is confidential when completed.
