    TRIO Talent Search Application

    Thank you for your interest in the Broward College TRIO Talent Search Program, a federally funded college access and success program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education preparing first- generation middle and high school students in Broward County to enter and succeed in post-secondary education.

    The TRIO Talent Search REACH Program serves students at the following grant target schools: Dillard 6-12 School, Plantation High School, and Sunrise High School.

    The Talent Search REACH Program is committed to guiding and preparing students for life after high school by providing free services such as academic advising, career exploration, financial aid and scholarship search assistance, opportunity to attend college tours, and more!

    TRIO advising services are provided weekly during the school year. Students may stop by the Guidance Office on the designated day to meet with a TRIO member during the student’s lunch hour. Summer services are also available virtually or at a Broward College campus with an appointment. Students and families may set up an appointment at any time during the year to meet with a TRIO team member to discuss post-secondary planning.

    Eligibility is based on federally defined criteria where 67% of our students must:

    · Be a first-generation college student (neither parent has a bachelor’s degree)

    · Limited income (verified by a Talent Search member) and

    · An eligible student must be currently enrolled in one of the target schools and be either a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who has not yet earned a high school degree but is committing to using Talent Search resources.

    WHEN SHOULD I APPLY?

    · Immediately! Applications are accepted throughout the year, but the program size is limited. Please answer all the questions on the application. Your responses are necessary to determine program eligibility and will be kept confidential.

    • Talent Search participants may participate in another federally funded program as long as the services provided to each student in not duplicated.

    • Student Commitment 
    • In order to participate in the TRIO Talent Search REACH Program at Broward College, the student agrees to:

      • Attend classes regularly and work towards maintaining a 2.5 or higher GPA each semester.
        • I understand if my G.P.A. falls below a 2.0, I may be ineligible to participate in some activities such as college tours or field trips. I will seek academic tutoring and may return to TRIO if my G.P.A. improves to a 2.0 or above.
      • Seek help from my teachers, counselors, BRACE and/or my TRIO Advisor when needed.
      • Meet with TRIO at least twice every year I am enrolled in middle or high school.
        • Some of the ways students can meet with TRIO are:
          • Stop by Guidance during your lunch for a TRIO Advising Session.
          • Connect with TRIO during a class presentation about post-secondary planning.
          • Attend a college and career readiness TRIO workshop (in-person or virtually).
          • Enroll in the free ACT/SAT prep program.
          • Participate in a college tour, cultural or STEM field trip.
      • Successfully be promoted to the next grade level each year in the TRIO program.
      • Graduate from high school and enroll in a post-secondary educational program (technical school/college/university) upon high school graduation.
      • Apply for financial aid during my senior year in high school.
      • Contact my TRIO Advisor if there is a change in my class schedule, home address or phone number, and/or if my family plans to move.
      • Behave and cooperate in a mature, responsible manner with TRIO Talent Search REACH, high school staff and students.
        • I understand that if there are any disciplinary concerns, I will be dismissed from the program.
      • Provide follow-up contact and graduation information to TRIO Talent Search REACH Program concerning my success in obtaining a post-secondary degree.

      By signing my name below, I acknowledge that participation in all of the TRIO Talent Search REACH Program activities is vital to my success. I agree to follow the above rules and understand that violation of these rules may result in dismissal from the program.

      Student Agreement

      I agree that if I am accepted into the TRIO Talent Search REACH Program, I pledge:

      • Be an active participant in the TRIO Talent Search REACH Program through the end of the summer after my high school graduation.
      • Attend all meetings, advising sessions, tutoring sessions, activities and/or field trips, both in-person and virtual.
      • Attend classes regularly and work towards maintaining a 2.5 or higher GPA each semester. I understand if my GPA falls below a 2.0 GPA, I may be ineligible to participate in some activities such as college tours or field trips.
      • Graduate from high school.
      • Cooperate and behave in a mature, responsible manner with TRIO Talent Search REACH and high school staff and students. I understand that if there are any discipline concerns, I will be dismissed from the program.
      • Enter a post-secondary educational program upon high school graduation.
      • Provide follow-up contact and graduation information to TRIO Talent Search REACH Program concerning my success in obtaining a post-secondary degree.

      Parent/Guardian Agreement

      • I grant permission for my child to participate in the Broward College – TRIO Talent Search REACH Program and receive services provided in-person or virtual (Zoom, Google platform).
      • I grant permission for my child to participate in group activities, field trips, and one-on-one sessions with staff.
      • I grant permission for my child to participate in activities that require transportation by the program.
      • I agree to encourage my child to do well in school and pursue post-secondary education.
      • I give Broward College TRIO Talent Search REACH Program permission to access grades, test scores, promotional/retention status, financial aid acceptance, post-secondary enrollment, progress reports, school transcripts, attendance records, and updated contact information from the school personnel and/or school database systems.
      • I authorize Broward College TRIO Talent Search REACH Program to obtain information related to my child’s application for college admission and acceptance status, financial aid application (FAFSA and scholarships), and award letter at any and all colleges and universities.
      • I will hold the TRIO Talent Search REACH Program and Broward College harmless for any damages that might result from the activities and releases mentioned above.

      TRIO Talent Search is federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by Broward College. Talent Search also works in conjunction with your local school Guidance and BRACE offices and focuses on 8th – 12th grade students.

      TRIO Talent Search REACH target schools are Dillard 6-12 School, Plantation High School and Sunrise High School.
