The Renowned Ronald E. McNair Program at UAB is an educational opportunity program that is federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The program at UAB is funded to serve 25 students each year. The mission of the McNair Scholars Program is to provide disadvantaged college students with effective preparation for doctoral study.
Eligibility
To participate in the McNair Scholars program, a student must be 1.) a first-generation college student with a limited family income or a member of an under-represented group in graduate education (§ 647.7), 2.) a citizen or permanent resident, 3.) an undergraduate students enrolled full-time at UAB (sophomore, junior, or senior), and 4.) committed to attending graduate school and earning an academic doctorate.
Note: Students must be interested in pursuing an academic doctorate such as a Ph.D. or Ed.D. Professional and clinical degrees such as JD, PharmD, MD, PT, OT, and DNP are excluded.
Benefits
The McNair Scholars Program provides various services to enhance PhD degree attainment. These include educational and counseling support focused on gaining admission and securing financial aid for graduate studies, mentorship from faculty, paid research opportunities, opportunities for students to engage in cultural events and academic programs, preparation for graduate school, tours of graduate institutions, and individual and professional development.
