    St. Mary’s University’s Upward Bound program assists high school students from SAISD and JISD prepare for college success. Upward Bound participants receive opportunities such as college & career exploration, SAT/ACT/TSI prep, financial literacy education, college admissions & financial aid application assistance, etc.

    ● A copy of your student’s birth certificate (or Permanent Resident Card)
    ● A signed copy of the previous calendar year’s Income Tax Return (IRS Form 1040) listing the student as a dependent

  • EXPECTATIONS OF PARENTS AND LEGAL GUARDIANS

    The St. Mary’s University Upward Bound program must be educational partners with parents and legal guardians. Fostering a positive working relationship with each other will support the program’s goals of participants completing high school and graduating from college. Accordingly, St. Mary’s University Upward Bound expects parents and legal guardians to:

    • Attend occasional Upward Bound events and activities to support their student’s educational goals.
    • Support their student’s full compliance with Upward Bound’s policies & procedures as stated in the Participant Handbook, along with any other written or verbal policies.
    • Grant permission for their student to participate in all activities required by the St. Mary’s University Upward Bound program.
    • Consent to Upward Bound obtaining their student’s transcripts (and educational records that pertain to academic progress) from the student’s high school, school district, and postsecondary educational institutions.
      • This information, protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), is necessary to determine eligibility for Upward Bound and helps Upward Bound and the U.S. Department of Education measure students' academic progress in high school and postsecondary education.
    • Grant permission to use their student’s name, statements, and likeness without charge for promotional purposes in Upward Bound’s publications, advertising, social media, etc.
  • EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENT

    The St. Mary’s University Upward Bound program’s expectations for my student if selected to participate include:

    Students will continue to be in the Upward Bound program through the summer after high school graduation, regardless of my level of participation.

    • Students will commit to regularly attending Upward Bound’s summer sessions, academic year sessions, events, and activities through the summer after high school graduation.
    • Students will attend individual advising with Upward Bound staff and communicate with Upward Bound staff through the summer after high school graduation.
    • Students will abide by all Upward Bound policies & procedures as stated in the Participant Handbook, along with any other written or verbal policies.
    • Students will commit to attending college as full-time students immediately following high school graduation and remain enrolled through college graduation.
  • STUDENT ELIGIBILITY STATEMENT

    The student eligibility requirements include but are not limited to:

    Students must be

    1. a citizen or national of the United States;
    2. a permanent resident of the United States;
    3. in the United States for other than a temporary purpose and provide evidence from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services of their intent to become a permanent resident;
    4. a permanent resident of Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, or the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands; OR
    5. a resident of the Freely Associated States - the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, or the Republic of Palau;

    Students must have completed the 8th grade and be between the ages of 13 and 1

  • AGREEMENTS

    • St. Mary’s University’s Upward Bound program reserves the right to withdraw privileges from students at
      any time (including discontinuation of participation in Upward Bound).
      • In the event of a dispute, the decision of the Upward Bound Director is final and may not be
        contested.
    • Recognizing that Upward Bound supervises students during program-sponsored activities, I release St.
      Mary’s University, the Upward Bound program, and its personnel from all legal liability if my student is
      involved in an accident, injury, or other misfortune.
    • I verify that all information reported on this application is true and correct to the best of my knowledge.
      • I agree to provide any documentation necessary to verify the information reported on this application.
    • I understand and consent to the information reported on this application being sent to the U.S. Department
      of Education, which funds Upward Bound.
