Friends Alongside McNair (FAM)

The program is designed for students who do not meet federal eligibility requirements for the McNair Scholars Program but who seek exposure to research opportunities, graduate school preparation, and scholarly community. Participation in FAM is limited to activities that do not require the use of federally allocated McNair program funds. As such, FAM participants may attend open workshops, seminars, and informational programming but are not eligible for funded services reserved exclusively for McNair Scholars, such as stipends, funded research placements, travel support, or other direct program expenditures.

- McNair Scholars conduct research under the guidance of a UAB faculty member. If a professor has already agreed to serve as your mentor, please enter their information (name, e-mail, phone number)

  Attach a personal statement. Your personal statement should be typed using Microsoft Word (One page, use Times New Roman font, font size: 12, doubled-spaced).
  In the essay you will explain the following:
  a. Why you should be selected to participate in the McNair Scholars program and what you expect to gain from being a participant in the program.
  b. Describe your current research interests and your prior research experience.
  c. State why you would like to attend graduate school, your motivation for pursuing a doctorate degree, and your educational and career goals.
  d. If you pursue a doctorate degree what contributions would you make to your field.
