    • Find your income tax documents. You will be asked for your taxable income.
    • If you are a dependent, you will need your family’s taxable income.
    • Fill out the application as completely and accurately as possible.

    • If you are considered an independent student who files their own taxes, please enter your tax information to complete the following questions.

      If you are considered a dependent as defined by FAFSA guidelines, please enter your parent's taxable income to complete the following questions. As a reminder, even if you don’t live with your parents/guardians, they don’t support you financially, or claim you on their taxes, you are still considered a dependent unless one of the following is true:

      • You are 24 years or older
      • You are married
      • You have children
      • You have dependents other than child/spouse who live with you and received at least half of their support from you
      • You are currently serving on active duty in the U.S. armed forces for purposes other than training
      • You are a veteran of the U.S. armed forces
      • At any time since turning age 13, both parents are deceased, you were in foster care, or you are a dependent or ward of the court
      • You are an emancipated minor or in a legal guardianship

      The term "low-income individual" means an individual whose family's taxable income for the preceding year did not exceed 150 percent of the poverty level amount.

      The figures shown under family income represent amounts equal to 150 percent of the family income levels established by the Census Bureau for determining poverty status.  The 2026 poverty guidelines were published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in the Federal Register on January 15, 2026, and are effective as of January 13, 2026.
